An Indian football coach has been arrested after a minor trainee accused him of sexual abuse that had occurred over a prolonged period of time, officials told local media sources. The accused named as Abhijit Mandal has been apprehended by the police after a case had been filed against him on charges under the POCSO act and other legal provisions of the country’s statute.
According to the police, the case had come into light after the minor revealed to his family members about being abused at the hands of his trainer. The police have initiated an extensive investigation into the case and analyzing the evidence pertaining to the alleged crimes.
It is believed that the accused had abused his position as a mentor and coach to gain the confidence of his victim, who according to the reports started being sexually abused during childhood years. As a result, the police were informed, legal action was filed against him and he was subsequently arrested.
Further investigations into the matter are underway, while more evidence has been collected as well. It should be noted that no information that might lead to the identity of the victim was released by the authorities because, according to the Indian laws, it is protected under certain circumstances.
In addition, the incident sparked discussions about the need to create safer conditions for children who practice organized sports because of their increased vulnerability in such situations.

The offences against minors are considered extremely seriously and require special procedures which should protect the interests of the child and his/her right to privacy during the legal proceedings.
