One year after the fatal terror attack in Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir which killed 26 people, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 22 honored the victims and once again made it clear that terrorism will never achieve its goals of breaking India.
It had been a terrorist attack organised last year by a Pakistan based terror group, Lashkar-e-Taiba, which had targeted tourists leaving families across the country in shock and in grief. On the first anniversary, the Prime Minister recalled the victims and sympathized with their families.
Nation Remembers Victims, Stands United
In a post made to the public, PM Modi said that the lives that were lost during the attack would never be forgotten. He also recognised the suffering of those families who are still struggling to come to terms with the tragedy and he underlined that the nation is united in sorrow and strength.
He clarified that India is not going to submit to terror and that no terrorist attack can shake the determination of the country and/or derail its course.
Background: What Happened in Pahalgam
It was an assault in Pahalgam, a tourist attraction site that is characterized by picturesque beauty. Gunmen fired and killed 26 people, majority of whom were tourists who came in other regions of India.
It was among the most outrageous attacks in the region in recent years, and it casts great doubts on the safety of tourist areas and caused immediate national and international responses.
The Indian Reaction to the attack
After the attack, India retaliated with a military operation dubbed Operation Sindoor. The strike targeted terror infrastructure on the other side of the border, such as sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
The strikes had been termed by the officials as a firm message against cross-border terrorism, to destroy networks whose activities led to such attacks.
A Continuing Message Against Terrorism
The anniversary has again highlighted the bigger problem of terrorism and national security. The statement of PM Modi is a consistent line of the government terrorism will be dealt with squarely and decisively.
Although the short-term consequences of the attack were marked with increased tensions and military actions, the bigger picture remains the provision of security, justice to the victims, and prevention of similar events in the future.
With the nation honoring the memory of terrorism victims, there is no mistaking the message: India is not done with the war against terror and its determination is not to be deterred.
