Once more, the White House has used social media to promote its goal of gaining Greenland. This time, the tweet uses an AI image of Donald Trump with the “Nihilist Penguin” to convey a mysterious message. Donald Trump, the president of the United States, declared he would not use force to take control of the island during the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland.
He even retracted his threats to impose tariffs on European countries. The US government has now turned to memes as a new weapon. The White House official X account capitalized on the “nihilist penguin” meme trend by sharing an AI-generated picture of Trump with a penguin.
With Greenlandic scenery in the background and the message “Embrace the penguin,” an official White House account posted an AI-generated image of the US president strolling across an arctic terrain with a penguin on Saturday.
Werner Herzog’s film Encounters at the End of the World is the source of the White House’s meme. The movie shows video of a lone Adélie penguin straying from its Antarctic colony; this image was eventually called the “Nihilist Penguin” meme.
Long before it was used for political purposes, it became a symbol of existential drift and rebellion on the internet.
However, the post soon attracted a lot of attention and ridicule online as X users used their own memes to point out that penguins are animals from Antarctica in the Southern Hemisphere, not Greenland, which is in the Northern Hemisphere.
Although the picture provoked laughter and criticism, it also fulfilled a well-known function: it supported the administration’s long-standing claim that Greenland is strategically important to the US. Citing the region’s location and increasing geopolitical significance, President Trump has frequently maintained that control of the Arctic territory is crucial to American national security.
Days after Washington seemed to ease its economic pressure on Europe, the meme appeared.
Following discussions between President Trump and Mark Rutte on the fringes of the World Economic Forum in Davos, the administration recently withdrew its proposed tariffs related to Greenland. Following the event, Trump stated that a framework for a future deal incorporating Greenland would be revealed eventually.
Officials in Denmark, the country that controls Greenland, are nonetheless cautious even if trade tensions have decreased. Denmark and other ally European countries had increased their presence on the island as a result of earlier rhetoric from Washington, including threats that the US may use military force if negotiations failed.
The picture of the penguin is not unique. The Trump administration has been using AI-generated postings and social media images more and more in recent weeks to spread its message about Greenland.
In the past, President Trump posted pictures of Greenland as a prospective US territory, such as one that showed him with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance standing next to a banner announcing Greenland’s inclusion in the US.
The question of whether the imagery is meant as symbolic, provocation, or a negotiating strategy was further fueled by another post that featured a modified map extending US borders to encompass Greenland and other areas.

While formal diplomacy with Europe continues behind closed doors, the White House seems determined to keep the issue alive in public discourse by moving the campaign to social media, frequently using contentious or hilarious graphics.
