Zoho Corporation founder Sridhar Vembu and his estranged wife, Pramila Srinivasan have again come under the spotlight of the people after reports that a US Court ordered Vembu to pledge a huge bond of 1.7 billion dollars (approximately 15,278 crore) on behalf of his wife.
Although the legal team of Vembu has stated that the order is appealed, the case has given a firm focus on the long-standing marital tussle and severe accusations leveled by Srinivasan.
Vembu returned to India in 2019 and the couple had lived in the United States almost 30 years. Srinivasan has alleged that the billionaire entrepreneur has deserted her and their autistic son and transferred the ownership of Zoho assets illegally to his family members in India.
Who Is Pramila Srinivasan?
Pramila Srinivasan is an American scholar, entrepreneur and health technology professional. The 58-year-old was born and brought up in New York and earned his doctorate in electrical and computer engineering in Purdue University. In 1993, four years after arriving in the US to study his PhD at Princeton University, she got married to Sridhar Vembu.
Srinivasan established her personal professional identity over the years. In 2007, she established MedicalMine, an electronic health records and health care practice management solutions company. She is also the founder of The Brain Foundation, a non-profit organisation which aids in the research, treatment and community outreach of autism. Srinivasan currently resides in San Francisco Bay with her son.
Life Together in the US
Vembu and Srinivasan spent almost thirty years in California after they had been married. Before founding a software company in 1996 along with his brothers and a close friend Tony Thomas, Vembu joined Qualcomm and worked there in the early days of his career.
The company was originally known as AdventNet and changed its name to Zoho Corporation in 2009. The couple has a son of 26 that is diagnosed with autism and needs special care.
What Led to the Divorce?
Reports indicate that the relationship hit cracks in the marriage because of differences on the ownership and control of assets at Zoho. Vembu left Silicon Valley in 2019 and moved to his village Mathalamparai in Tamil Nadu. He has since addressed the public on rural development and operation of Zoho in India.
One of the sources near Srinivasan told Forbes that in November 2020, Vembu told her that he would like to divorce her through WhatsApp. In August 2021, he officially petitioned to divorce. Srinivasan, in his book, has made serious allegations.
Srinivasan has also issued some firm charges against Vembu in court filings. She has asserted that in 2020, he left her and their autistic son and never came back to the US. She also affirmed that she helped the family to make ends meet in the initial years of their marriage.
Among the main problems of the case is the fact that Vembu, without either her knowledge or her consent, transferred the stakes and intellectual property of Zoho to his siblings in India in some complicated transactions. She claims that this is against the community property laws in California.
According to California law, property that is obtained in marriage is a community property and should be shared in the divorce process no matter the location of the assets. Srinivasan, in a court statement, claimed that Vembu had transferred these without any payment, consideration or without informing her.
Vembu Denies All Charges
The accusations have been fiercely denied by Sridhar Vembu. In an in-depth 2023 post on X (formerly Twitter), he denied allegations that he left his wife and son.
According to Vembu, Srinivasan and his son are living a better life than what he is living and that he has been taking care of them financially. He further stated that his US salary in the last three years have been with Srinivasan, that he had given her their house, and Zoho contributes to her foundation.
The $1.7 Billion Bond Scandal
This controversy escalated after Srinivasan submitted an ex parte application in November 2024 and a US court said that Vembu was ordered to post a bond amounting to 1.7 billion dollars.
His attorney, Christopher C. Melcher, however, explained that the January 2025 order was still being appealed and termed the claims as outrageously false.
An Ongoing Legal Battle
The issue of divorce between Sridhar Vembu and Pramila Srinivasan has been experiencing a series of twists over the years and is yet to be realized.
