India has been facing one of the largest health and economic problems in diabetes, a new global study has found. According to researchers at the Vienna University of Economics and Business and the International Institute of Applied Systems Analysis, India ranks as the second largest nation with the economic burden caused by diabetes in the world. The United States is number one, followed by China at position three.
This is particularly significant considering that diabetes and prediabetes are taking a huge toll on the population of India. A recent national survey indicated an approximation of 11.4 percent that Indians are living with diabetes. Moreover, approximately 15.3 percent of the population of approximately 136 million individuals have prediabetes. It is far too large to the expectations of many of us.
Diabetes is regarded as a severe and permanent condition. Nonetheless, it prediabetes (or borderline diabetes) is the stage where individuals still possess much in terms of control. At this level, there is an increase in blood sugar, but not to the extent that can be referred to as diabetes.

A level of HbA1c of 5.7-6.5 indicates prediabetes. A reading of 6.5 and above is typically indicative of diabetes.
The positive aspect is that prediabetes is reversible. Research indicates that normalization of a normal blood sugar level can be achieved by losing approximately five to seven percent of body weight and by cutting down on caloric intake to restore normalcy. Having a normal weight helps a lot in preventing prediabetes into diabetes.
The changes in lifestyle are not limited to reducing sugar. The advice given by doctors is to eat balanced meals at regular intervals, eat less processed and packaged foods, take fewer sweet drinks and refined carbohydrates, and manage portions. It is also very important to maintain regular physical activity. Moderate aerobic exercises such as a brisk walk or 40 to 60 minutes of aerobic activity can do the trick.
The greatest myth concerning prediabetes is that it is not a disease and it will not advance to diabetes. This belief tends to make individuals fail to make changes. This habit is recommended as the regular exercise doctors say every person with prediabetes should follow.

So there is no need in panicking in case your doctor informs you that your blood sugar is borderline high. But one should not be lazy about it. Small lifestyle changes, early-on intervention, and consistent medical counseling would see many individuals prevent diabetes and safeguard their long-term health.
