In 2026, Mother’s Day will be celebrated on Sunday, 10 May, all over India and many other countries and people will take time to acknowledge their mother or the mother figure in their lives for their unconditional love, sacrifice and lifelong support. Google also had a special doodle to celebrate mothers all over the world this year.
The Google Doodle featured a handcrafted card design with paper-cut letters, a carnation flower and a cactus symbolising protection and unconditional love. The company said the piece is a tribute to moms all across the world.
In India, the United States, Canada and Australia, Mother’s Day is observed on the second Sunday of May. Each celebration is unique, but there is one thing in common: the feeling of thanksgiving to mothers and caregivers.
The Roots of Mother’s Day

Today’s modern Mother’s Day can be traced back to the early 20th century in the United States. In 1908 Anna Jarvis, a social activist, held the first official Mother’s Day event in honor of her mother, who had dedicated many years to community service during the American Civil War.
The celebration gradually transformed and became a worldwide event to celebrate all mothers, grandmothers, foster mothers, stepmothers and maternal figures.
But the idea is very old. In the ancient world, Mother goddesses were worshipped during festivals and in medieval Europe Mothering Sunday became a religious holiday.
