A new report has cast grave doubts regarding the health and power of the new supreme leader of Iran known as Mojtaba Khamenei as he is alleged to have been fatally wounded by a recent U.S. Israeli airstrike and has temporarily abdicated some of his most important powers to the military leaders.
As per the reports of the international media, Khamenei was seriously injured in the February 28 strike which allegedly killed his father and former supreme leader Ali Khamenei. Although the allegations have not been officially verified by Tehran, they have made the situation of the Iranian leadership more speculative in the light of increased tensions in the region.
Injuries and Health Condition
According to the report, Mojtaba Khamenei has been seriously injured during the attack but is mentally stable. The officials allegedly reported that:
- One of his legs has gone through several operations and might have to have a prosthetic.
- He has been injured in his hand and gradually gaining movement.
- Burns on his face and lips have left him with his speech problems.
- Additional reconstructive or plastic surgery might be necessary.
It is claimed that access to him is highly limited due to security reasons. Since assuming leadership, he has not been seen in public and has only been communicating through written statements.
Revolutionary Guards take over power
His condition restricting direct participation has been reported to have devolved the powers of decision making to the senior commanders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. These generals are now reportedly making strategic military and political decisions, such as sensitive operations associated with the current tension with the United States and Israel.
This is a tremendous change since the Revolutionary Guards already have immense power in the Iranian power apparatus. Their broadened role would redefine the response of the country to regional conflicts, more so in the face of increasing geopolitical risks.
Iranian Leadership
The report also asserts that Masoud Pezeshkian is a direct beneficiary of the medical attention of Khamenei. Interestingly, Pezeshin is a heart surgeon in-training, which could be the reason why he is involved in monitoring treatment.
Meanwhile, military leaders who originally perceived the war with the U.S. and Israel to be an existential danger to the regime are reported to be working on operational strategies. This involves initiatives made on vital issues like the Strait of Hormuz, a major oil transit route in the world.
Increasing Doubt on the Iranian Leadership
The fact that Khamenei stays out of the limelight has led to a lot of speculation on his real state and capacity to lead. The uncertainty has been further compounded by the use of handwritten messages and not seeing each other face-to-face.
With Iran going through one of the most unstable geopolitical periods of recent years, any instability at the top will have far-reaching consequences, not just to the country, but to the Middle East, in general.
What This Implicates In Future
Although the Iranian authorities have not officially confirmed it, the developments reported indicate a transitory change of power in the leadership system of Iran. Assuming it is true, it is one of those rare instances when military leadership becomes a more prominent part of government.
This is a dynamic situation and more clarity will only come when Tehran makes an official declaration or Khamenei appears publicly. The reports are expected to continue stirring the international interest towards the inner processes of Iran and its further actions in the geopolitical arena until that time.
