The army chief of Pakistan Asim Munir has found himself in the glare of the limelight with his conflicting looks at the top-level diplomatic conferences in the Pakistani capital, where the Iranian and the United States delegations came to hold critical discussions during a sensitive ceasefire.
What was most notable was not only the importance of the meetings, but the visual message, which Munir seemed to convey by means of dressing the way he did a gesture that has elicited some controversy among geopolitical observers.
Various uniforms, different signs
Munir was observed in full combat uniform as the Iranian delegation, headed by Mohammad Ghalibaf and Abbas Araghchi landed in Islamabad. The move was instantly noticed, particularly with the already strained history of military tension between Iran and Pakistan.
But only a few hours later, when the US Vice President JD Vance came, Munir changed to a formal black suit, appearing in a much different way. The discrepancy was not lost on observers, as analysts indicated that it was not accidental.

Defence and strategic experts think that the wardrobe change of Munir was aimed at indicating two postures. The fact that he showed up in battle attire during the reception of the Iranian delegation was seen as demonstration of military might, especially given the historical antecedents, such as missile exchanges and border conflict.

Here, the fact that Munir wore combat clothes during the Iranian visit is being considered a subtle, yet a strong indication.

Other than the dress code, the active participation of Munir in receiving the two delegations has also created some doubts concerning the power structure within Pakistan. The traditional role of such responsibilities is within the sphere of elected civilian leadership and these are the Prime Minister or the Foreign Minister.

His participation in the frontline, where he was walking together with JD Vance in the red carpet and interacting directly with the foreign leaders, strengthened the impression that the military still plays a big role in the governance system of Pakistan.
Other observers related the imagery to previous events in the history of Pakistan, when military leaders like Yahya Khan or Pervez Musharraf controlled the political and diplomatic arena.
Optics and political messages
Diplomatic analysts postulate that the optics was well designed not only to suit the eyes of international observers but also a domestic audience. Putting himself in the limelight at such a life or death situation, Munir seemed to emphasize his authority and central position in decision-making.

Simultaneously, the US delegation interrelation with the civilian government of Pakistan, as well as the Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, demonstrated the balancing process between the military and the political institutions.
