The Class 10 results of 2026 have been announced by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), and the overall pass percentage of 93.70 is slightly better than that of last year, which was 93.66. Although the national figure indicates a stability in performance, further examination of the region-wise data reveals that there are considerable differences, especially in Uttar Pradesh.
Two of the major regions in the state, Lucknow and Prayagraj, have registered lower percentages of passes than the national average, which implies that academic results in various regions of the country are not equal.
UP regions are below national standards
Lucknow scored 91.63 percent in the pass percentage in the CBSE region-wise performance list and ranked 15th. Prayagraj on the other hand had a lower pass rate of 89.45, and was placed 17 th among the regions listed.
Both regions, when compared to the national average of 93.70, lie below the mark, with Prayagraj having a greater discrepancy. The variance implies that the overall performance is good, although in some regions, the performance still has to be at the national level.
The difference also brings to the fore the difficulty in obtaining similar academic results amongst the states particularly in areas with different educational facilities and capabilities.
Acute difference with best performing regions
Trivandrum and Vijayawada have become the top performing regions in the CBSE regional rankings with both recording a high pass percentage of 99.79. Chennai and Bengaluru were not far behind with 99.58% and 98.91 respectively.

The difference is further seen as these figures are compared to the performance of Uttar Pradesh. Lucknow, the higher performing region in the state, is more than 8 percentage points behind the top regions. The disparity is even bigger in the example of Prayagraj.
This disparity gives an indication of a high discrepancy between academic performance, and raises the question of what factors may be causing a high performance in certain regions than others.
What the statistics imply regarding regional performance
The general pass percentage reflects the fact that the results of the evaluation are stable at the national level at CBSE. But the distribution of the region wise is a different tale wherein performance has not been uniformly distributed.
The imbalance can be traced in the fact that Uttar Pradesh was ranked in the lower half of the region ranking. Although the performance does not significantly decrease, the data indicates that the improvement is not even over all regions.
Such variations may be due to several factors such as variations in access to quality education, standards of teaching, infrastructure, and student support systems. Nevertheless, the official statistics do not indicate the causes of the gap.
A larger trend than the overall results
The 2026 outcomes provide support to a trend that has been followed over the years – high national performance and regional diversity. Although most students pass the test, the difference between high-performing and low-performing areas remains to be stable.
In the case of states such as Uttar Pradesh, this may now be turned to finding solutions on these gaps and the underlying factors which influence student performance. It is the closing of this gap that will help to make academic performance more equalized in the regions.
The outcomes as students proceed with their educational decisions are not only a marker of success but also a reminder of the inequalities that prevail in the system. The difficulty of the education authorities is that it should be more distributed in all regions so that at least a national level is improved.
As CBSE has been able to maintain a high overall pass percentage, the next move will be to narrow down regional variations and establish more standardized level of performance in the country.
