The National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) will be closed on Thursday, January 15, 2026, because of the Maharashtra civic body elections. Trading will not take place in equity, derivatives, or debt market segments on that day.

The NSE confirmed January 15 as a trading holiday after earlier confusion among investors. Initially, the exchange had suggested that trading would continue as usual, but it later issued a clarification stating that markets would remain closed because of the municipal corporation elections in Maharashtra. In an official notification, the NSE said that January 15 has been declared a trading holiday for the capital market and debt segments.

The BSE has also announced a holiday on the same day. All trading activities on the Bombay Stock Exchange, including equity and derivatives trading, will remain suspended on January 15.

Along with this clarification, the exchanges have released the full list of stock market holidays for 2026. Apart from weekends, the markets will remain closed on several national and regional holidays throughout the year. In January, markets will be shut on January 15 for the Maharashtra civic polls and again on January 26 for Republic Day.

February will not have any trading holidays other than regular weekends. In March, the markets will be closed on March 26 for Shri Ram Navami and on March 31 for Shri Mahavir Jayanti. In April, trading will remain suspended on April 3 for Good Friday and April 14 for Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Jayanti.

In May, markets will be closed on May 1 for Maharashtra Day and on May 28 for Bakr Eid. June will see a holiday on June 26 for Muharram. There are no trading holidays scheduled in July and August apart from weekends. In September, markets will be closed on September 14 for Ganesh Chaturthi.

October will have two market holidays, October 2 for Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti and October 20 for Dussehra. In November, markets will remain closed on November 8 for Diwali Laxmi Puja. However, Muhurat trading will be held on the same day, with timings to be announced later. Another holiday in November falls on November 10 for Diwali Balipratipada, followed by November 24 for Prakash Gurpurab of Sri Guru Nanak Dev. The final trading holiday of the year will be on December 25 for Christmas.

The market closure on January 15 is linked to the Maharashtra civic body elections. Polling will take place for 29 municipal corporations across the state, including the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation. The election covers 2,869 seats across 893 wards, with over 15,900 candidates contesting. The results are scheduled to be announced on January 16.

This election is significant as it is the first BMC election after the split in the Shiv Sena and the Nationalist Congress Party. It will also mark the first time that Raj Thackeray’s Maharashtra Navnirman Sena and Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena (UBT) are contesting together.

Investors and traders are advised to plan their activities in advance and keep track of exchange updates for any further changes.
