Melinda French Gates, the former wife and philanthropist of the Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, has been in the news, publicly reacting to recently leaked documents relating to the Justice Department inquiry into the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

In an open interview with NPR in the Wild Card podcast, French Gates said that she is incredibly sad about the revelations and that the questions the files bring up are ones that her former husband and others with connections to the matter should answer.

The recent release of papers, which was also published in relation to the continuous public investigation of Epstein and his network and contacts, has rejuvenated the memory of personalities who had crossed with Epstein over the years.

Even though French Gates emphasized that she is not fully aware of what was in all the material, she explained that it is personally difficult to hear what was in it because it is causing her painful memories of her marriage to Bill Gates.

Personally, it is difficult whenever such details arise in my case. Since it reminded me of some very, very painful moments in my marriage, French Gates said as a result of the podcast interview. Any questions they have left there of what I cannot even say all of it are questions to those people and even to my former husband. It is their answer to those things, not mine.

French Gates said that she felt unbelievably sad at the files that were released. She added that in the society, there is a more moment of responsibility that is unraveling around the way of how the vulnerable young women were treated especially in circumstances relating to Epstein and the people around him.

I believe that we are going through a reckoning of a society, right? No girl must ever be created the circumstances in which they were placed by Epstein and whatever transpired of all the different individuals about him. No girl. It is simply heartbreaking, said she.

In 2021, French Gates divorced Bill Gates. In the podcast, she has not been shy to reveal the toll the events have had on her emotionally, both as an individual and as a victim of her marriage in the past. She claimed that the publication of the documents evoked some painful thoughts and she claimed that she had to leave her marriage, move away the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

I am glad to have escaped all the muck they could get down there, she said. I needed to move out of my marriage and the foundation. She said that taking a break gave her room to heal herself and at the same time sympathise with Epstein abuse survivors.

French Gates explained that her outlook has changed with time and she could now use her own hurt to feel the same in other people that got injured.

I can take my own melancholy and go to those young girls and say, My God, how come that happened to those girls? At least I have been able to get on with life, and I wish there is some justice with those now-women, as I said to the NPR host.

The interview highlights that the continued repercussions of the Epstein incident are still being felt long after the crimes and the conviction. It also underscores how French Gates is resolute to remain committed to enlarging the issues of accountability and survivors support, although information related to influential personalities and organizations keeps on coming up.

Simultaneously, her remarks imply that even some of the questions that the newly revealed documents brought up, especially those that involve the overlap of high-profile people with Epstein, have not yet been addressed in the open space, and might have to be discussed by the persons in question itself.

The comments of French Gates are bound to increase the curiosity of the people regarding what was in the leaked files and the way it connects with the broader debates concerning power, privilege and responsibility.

Her position is both a response and a demand to the society at large to more thoroughly confront the history of the abuses committed by Epstein and the systems that empowered him to do so as the people continue to wade through the new information.
