On Friday, January 24, 2026, during wedding festivities at the home of a peace committee member in Pakistan’s northwest Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, a suicide explosion resulted in at least five fatalities and ten injuries.
A suicide bomber detonated an explosive vest among guests at a wedding event on Friday in the unstable Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of northwest Pakistan, killing at least seven people and injuring twenty-five more.
According to local authorities, the incident took place at the home of Noor Alam Mehsud, a pro-government community leader in the Dera Ismail Khan district. With bloodstains and debris all over the place, the explosion created panic in the packed auditorium.
Sajjad Ahmed Sahibzada, the district police officer for Dera Ismail Khan district, revealed that it was a suicide explosion that happened during a wedding celebration at the home of Noor Alam Mehsud, the head of the peace committee, close to Qureshi Morr.
When the attack happened, the guests were dancing. The ceiling collapsed due to the enormous blast, which made it difficult to reach people trapped beneath the wreckage and hindered rescue operations. A “good Talib,” a word used to describe a former fighter who has turned himself in to the government, was among those killed, according to officials, while the others were his family.
The deceased and injured were taken to a local hospital, according to the police, where several of the injured were claimed to be in critical condition. Security personnel cordoned off the area and began a search operation to find any collaborators.
Initial reports stated that one of the deceased was Waheedullah Mehsud, also known as Jigri Mehsud, a head of the peace committee.
The attack has not yet been attributed to any group. However, the suicide attack is thought to have been carried out by the Pakistani Taliban, also known as Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). In recent years, the group has carried out a number of attacks in Pakistan.
Four members of a peace committee were slain by armed attackers earlier this month in the Bannu area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. A peace committee office in the same province was assaulted in November 2025, resulting in the deaths of seven persons.
The District Headquarter Hospital has declared an emergency. Five bodies and ten injured had been transported to the hospital, according to a statement from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Rescue 1122 spokesperson Bilal Ahmed Faizi.
He added that a rescue effort was in progress and that shortly after the incident was reported, seven ambulances, a fire truck, and a disaster vehicle arrived at the scene.
Authorities investigated the incident and cordoned off the area. Waheedullah Mehsud, also known as Jigri Mehsud, the leader of the peace committee, was reportedly among the deceased.
Sohail Afridi, the chief minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, vehemently denounced the explosion and requested a report from the inspector general of police. He promised to hold those accountable accountable.
