Jaspal Rana, the popular Indian shooter and coach, died at the age of 49. The death of the renowned personality has been announced by NRAI after a prolonged illness caused by a sickness he contracted after his return from the ISSF World Cup, which was held in Munich, Germany. Despite all the attempts of the medical professionals of the Delhi hospital, he could not be saved from the illness.

Regarded as one of the best Indian shooters ever, Jaspal Rana enjoyed a successful career for more than a decade during which he earned numerous medals at several tournaments such as Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, and World Championship.

The personality of Jaspal Rana is well recognized for its success and medals that include gold at Asian Games and records set at Commonwealth Games when he won up to 15 medals including nine gold.

However, apart from the success in the field, Rana has also served as a source of inspiration for the next generations of Indian shooters as a coach. He has acted as a high performance coach for Indian pistol shooters.

It has been mentioned that he lies behind the present-day Olympic champion, Manu Bhaker, and his contribution has been quite significant in making India successful in shooting events. Jaspal Rana has received numerous national-level honors for his contributions to sports in India like Arjuna award, Padma Shri, and Dronacharya Award.

Not just success in shooting events, Rana has made an impression in the Indian sport with his stress on mental strength and discipline amongst the athletes. Many of the top shooters in India have appreciated his role in nurturing them throughout their careers.

The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi termed his demise “as a huge loss to the world of Indian sports”, while his former team members recalled him as a personality who made shooting one of the most successful Olympic sports in India.
