Elon Musk Says, India’s Declining Fertility Rate: Why It’s Falling?

Musk's latest observation about India's declining birth rate has once again brought forth the issue of how the country is moving towards demographic change. This comes at a time when India's fertility rate is lower than the replacement point for the first time ever.

Billionaire businessman Elon Musk has reignited debate on India’s demographic future following his observation about its decreasing fertility rate. Following recent population data released by the government, Musk has observed that India’s fertility rate is now below the replacement rate, especially amongst educated Indians.

The observations come after new figures indicate that India’s Total Fertility Rate (TFR) has dropped to 1.9, below the replacement rate of 2.1 for the first time ever. The replacement rate is described as the number of children born to a woman in order to stabilize the population without immigration.

Why Has India’s Fertility Rate Dropped?

According to experts, the cause cannot be attributed to one thing, but rather it is a mixture of social and economic factors that have occurred gradually over the decades.

Education has been one of the key determinants behind this. Increased educational levels generally correlate with postponing marriages, being involved in the workforce, and having smaller families. Couples who seek higher education and employment end up having fewer children compared to their parents.

Another significant factor has been urbanisation. Urban families encounter high costs for housing, healthcare, and education expenses, making it difficult and costly to raise children.

Another aspect is the growing preference for certain lifestyles. Young generations now give priority to financial security, professional and personal success before settling down and having children. It is interesting to point out that this trend has been observed in other nations located throughout Europe and East Asia.

Differences in Regional Fertility Across India

The declining fertility rate phenomenon has not been uniform within the territory of India. Southern Indian regions like Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh have shown more rapid declines compared to several Northern states which are still above the replacement level.

According to statistical data, only a few states like Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, and Jharkhand currently have fertility rates above the replacement level.

Implications for India

Even though the population in India is likely to continue increasing due to demographic momentum for some time, there is a possibility that the reduction in fertility levels could result in an ageing population in India coupled with a smaller working-age population in the long run.

On the other hand, according to some experts, low fertility rates can be beneficial if the country is able to enhance its productivity through improved education and employment opportunities for women.

In this regard, depending upon how policy-makers manage the trend, it may bring either positive or negative implications in the future.

However, as discussions and debates about the matter rage on, the dropping fertility rates have come to be seen as one of the most significant demographic trends in India.
