A major earthquake, measuring up to 7.8 on the Richter scale, hit the waters near the southern Philippine island of Mindanao, killing 15 individuals and injuring many others. The massive quake triggered panic, building damage, and a tsunami warning in various Southeast Asian nations.
It is said that the earthquake had its epicentre along the coast of the Sarangani province, which is found in Mindanao. This earthquake affected numerous provinces within the Philippines, as well as some places in the nearby Indonesian country.
According to reports from emergency workers, most deaths were caused by falling objects as well as the collapse of buildings and landslide as a result of strong tremors. Efforts to evaluate the extent of destruction continued as rescue operations went underway.
A number of buildings were destroyed in General Santos City, which was among the worst affected urban areas close to the source. Videos uploaded on social media indicated damaged business buildings and rescue efforts by emergency personnel with fears of people being trapped under rubble.

Not only that, the earthquake also generated warnings of tsunamis in parts of the country like the Philippines, while the neighbouring nations of Indonesia, Malaysia, Japan, and Australia issued advisories.
There were instructions to evacuate from vulnerable coastal communities and take shelter at safer locations due to fear of tsunamis. However, tsunami threats were subsequently scaled back due to wave activity assessments.
Ferdinand Marcos Jr., President of the Philippines, declared a disaster response immediately and ordered relevant government agencies to offer disaster relief supplies. Many schools were closed due to inspections in various damaged regions.
The authorities further cautioned the locals against strong aftershocks that occurred after the main shock. People have been asked by disaster management personnel not to enter damaged buildings until thorough safety checks are done.

The Philippines is one of the nations most vulnerable to earthquakes because it lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire, which is notorious for high levels of seismic and volcanic activity. While the nation faces many earthquakes annually, not all of them have catastrophic effects or lead to deaths and injuries.
With the rescue and recovery operations ongoing, it is anticipated that more details concerning casualties and damage will be released in the next few days.
