The next major movie in the Marvel universe has come as a surprise to the fans and the initial look of Avengers: Doomsday made enormous amounts of buzz at the CinemaCon in Las Vegas. The biggest surprise Robert Downey Jr. is back in the Marvel world, but not Iron Man. This time, he plays the legendary villain, Doctor Doom.

The surprise immediately became the climax of the event, and it became a significant turning point to the directions of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Chris Evans, who plays Steve Rogers, also makes a comeback with him, prefiguring a reunion that many believed ended with Avengers: Endgame.

A more serious MCU is introduced with the appearance of Doctor Doom

The trailer, which was premiered at CinemaCon, begins in a warning tone suggesting that there is an impending danger. In just a few minutes, viewers were shown how Downey Jr became Doctor Doom, wearing a metal mask and a darker character that was much different than Tony Stark.

The clip then cuts to a rapid montage of various characters of the growing world of Marvel. Old characters and new ones are present, such as Mister Fantastic, Bucky Barnes, Yelena, Shuri, Namor and others indicating a huge ensemble cast.

The tone is the outstanding one. In contrast to previous Avengers movies, Doomsday seems to overindulge in a more somber, high-stakes storyline, in which even survival becomes questionable.

Thor vs Doom and a shocking reappearance

The second most discussed scene of the trailer is the one where Thor, Chris Hemsworth, faces Doctor Doom. This moment is full of tension as Thor tries to attack with Stormbreaker but Doom easily defends himself emphasizing the magnitude of the power the new villain has.

It appears to be a hopeless situation but just in time, a familiar voice breaks through. Thor is shocked as Steve Rogers comes back. In a scene that is all about the impact on the fan, we can see Rogers picking up Mjolnir back to his legacy as Captain America.

This order itself was apparently met with big crowd cheers at the event, with many stating that it was one of the most impactful reveals in recent Marvel history.

Russo Brothers come back, the scale is increased

Another aspect the film represents is a reappearance of directors Joe and Anthony Russo, who have directed some of the biggest hits of Marvel. Their return is an indication that Marvel is trying to replicate the size and emotional resonance of Infinity War and Endgame.

The fact that there are characters of more than one timeline and franchise suggests that there may be a bigger multiverse plot, which Marvel has been setting up in the last few stages.

What the comeback is important

Downey Jr, particularly as a villain, is an act that is being viewed as a strategy. The introduction of Iron Man in a totally different avatar after the heartfelt departure of the character in the Endgame is not only nostalgic but also unpredictable.

Equally, the reappearance of Chris Evans as Steve Rogers begs the question of timeline changes, parallel timelines or incomplete storylines in the MCU.

Even Evans himself suggested that he had agreed to do it because the story required it, implying his role might be more than a cameo.

Box office battle already brewing

Avengers: Doomsday will be released in December 2026 and will establish a box office battle against the second instalment of the Dune franchise. The face-off is already being billed as a big-stakes movie battle and both movies will have huge audiences worldwide.

Doomsday seems more than just another sequel to Marvel, it is an effort to jumpstart the momentum once again, to revive old heroes and a new central villain that can drive the next part of the story.

Having already garnered fan response with reactions being intense even though the trailer has not been released publicly yet, the expectations are now sky-high. It remains to be seen later this year whether the movie can live up to all this hype but in the meantime, Marvel has easily managed to capture the world interest once again.
