Priyanka Gandhi Criticises Assam CM Gogoi Family Issue

On Friday, February 20, 2026, Congresswoman Priyanka Gandhi Vadra accused Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of engaging in wrong politics by criticizing Gaurav Gogoi over supposed ties to Pakistan.

Ms. Vadra said the musician was above politics and shared the message of love throughout his life after honoring Zubeen Garg at his cremation site, Zubeen Khetra, in Sonapur, on the outskirts of Guwahati.

In politics, there are two kinds of leaders: those who practice polarization and those who practice constructive politics.

When questioned about Mr. Sarma’s persistent criticism of the Assam Congress president due to purported ties to Pakistan, she responded, Gaurav Gogoi is doing the politics of love.

Mr. Gogoi is a positive person, and wants to bring positivity in politics, according to Ms. Vadra.

That is the reason he is being attacked in this way. Assamese people are aware of this. However, Gaurav and his family’s attacks are the wrong kind of politics. A political leader’s family and children should not be attacked, according to Ms. Vadra.

The Wayanad MP suggested that the Assam chief minister talk about the youth and women of the state, who are looking for jobs in place of such politics.

Vadra also criticized Sarma in an interview with reporters here for allegedly engaging in corruption, concentrating money in one family, and handing over public assets to large businesses. Assamese citizens, she said, were beginning to recognize that a change was needed.

In politics, a lot of decisions are made. Some are in favor, while others are opposed. We must put up with it. When asked about Sarma’s recent statements regarding his potential to become CM of the Congress, Vadra responded, What would I say if he (Sarma) is still crying over the 10 year old issue?”

After the 2011 assembly elections, there was dissension within the Assam Congress, with some MLAs supporting Sarma to succeed incumbent Tarun Gogoi as chief minister.

After leaving the party to join the BJP in 2015, Sarma was instrumental in the saffron party’s first ever victory in the 2016 assembly elections.

Please let the CM know that he ought to discuss the progress in Assam. Allow him to talk about the people of Assam and what he has done for them. Allow him to discuss his plans for the upcoming five years. The young person is curious, Vadra remarked.

People are able to see the transfer of Assamese assets to large industrialists and one family. The people of Assam own these resources. People own the land being given away, Vadra stated.

Vadra appealed to people, especially the younger generation, to back positive politics that aims to fortify the state, saying, You have seen how much corruption has taken place.

This corruption is a betrayal with the people of Assam. They are observing and comprehending this. Additionally, they are seeing that a change is needed, the Congress leader continued.

You can see how widespread corruption is. It is simply a betrayal of the state’s citizens, she told reporters.

Regarding her morning visit to Zubeen Khetra, Vadra stated that she went to the cremation site to honor the musician and refrain from engaging in any political activity since Zubeen Garg was above politics.

She went on to say that his cremation site ought to be a place of worship and not a political arena.
