In the Jagatsinghpur region of Odisha, a 23 year old lady was raped twice in one day in different locations by her lover and a stranger who was trying to help her. She was then thrown from a four story structure, which ultimately killed her, according to police on Friday.
The accused were taken into custody by the police and charged with kidnapping, rape, and murder under several BNS provisions.
The incident happened on February 22 after the woman left her home to go on an elopement with her lover, who had promised to marry her and requested her to come to a temple. But he took her to a remote location, sexually assaulted her, and left her at the Rahama bus stop,” Jagatsinghpur Superintendent of Police Ankit Kumar Verma said reporters today.
Another man from Jharkhand, who was riding his motorcycle to neighboring Paradip, noticed the unfortunate woman waiting at the bus stop and offered assistance.
However, the SP said that he raped her once again while she was on the roof of his rental home in Paradip town.
He said the woman was killed when the accused hurled her off the building’s roof, and her body was discovered the next morning.
According to the SP, on February 25, the victim’s brother filed a complaint at the Paradip Model police station, claiming that his sister had been raped and killed on February 22. After the woman’s body was recovered on February 23, an unnatural death case was filed.
When his sister failed to come home on the evening of February 22, the woman’s brother had filed a missing persons report at the Tirtol police station.
In the state assembly, BJD supremo and Leader of the Opposition Naveen Patnaik denounced the incident and called for justice for the woman and other victims of recent rapes.
How many more lives will be lost, innocent ones? No one is safe, from young ladies with disabilities to underage girls. So, does the state still uphold the rule of law? It is extremely unsettling to learn about horrible crimes from Kanhari in Angul, Kuchinda in Sambalpur, and Paradip. In an X post, he exclaimed, “O Mother!” There was chaos everywhere and insecurity everywhere.
The situation on the ground is really concerning, even while the administration makes drawn out statements about women’s safety and law and order.
Fear permeates the air even throughout the day. The government’s inaction in the face of several cases of such heinous crimes is giving the criminals more confidence.
