Mumbai is currently facing a major problem after the CNG gas pipeline was damaged.
This pipeline is actually located inside the RCF plant in Chembur, was also damaged on November 16, 2025.
It is one of the main pipelines that helps to supply CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) to the city. Because of the damage, the Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) is now unable to send gas properly to the pumps.
Due to this current issue, around 486 CNG stations in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, and even Thane have either shut down or are working very slowly. This has also been a big reason that has caused huge problems for people who depend on CNG vehicles for daily travel.
More than 3 lakh auto-rickshaws, taxis, and buses in Mumbai use CNG.
Since they cannot fill their tanks normally, many drivers are required to keep waiting in long lines at the few stations that still have some supply.
Many drivers have also gone to the extent that they have parked their vehicles overnight just to get some gas in the morning.
Because of this shortage, people are also trying to book cabs using apps like Ola and Uber are also facing problems.
Low availability of cabs has led to higher prices due to the method of surge pricing. This means passengers are also paying much more than usual for their rides.
MGL has also said it is working to fix the pipeline quickly. They are giving priority to all the piped gas for homes so that daily cooking and gas supply at home aren’t affected.
The company also now hopes to fully restore CNG supply by noon on November 18, 2025. Until then, the shortage is likely to continue.
Drivers and commuters are being asked to have their backup plans for now, and also plan and be patient, as normal service may take time to return.
