Veteran West Bengal politician Mukul Roy passed away on Monday, leaving the state’s political circles in mourning. He reportedly died of cardiac arrest at a private hospital after battling several health issues for a long time. In recent months, his condition had worsened and he had been in and out of hospital care.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed deep sorrow over his demise. In a message shared on social media, she said she was shocked and heartbroken by the news.

She described Mukul Roy as a long-time political colleague who stood with her through many struggles and important moments in their political journey.

Mamata Banerjee recalled that Roy had worked tirelessly for the All India Trinamool Congress since the party was founded. According to her, he played a major role in building the organisation and strengthening it at different levels. His political understanding and organisational skills earned him respect across the party.

TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee also paid tribute, saying Roy’s death marks the end of an important chapter in West Bengal’s political history.

He said Roy’s experience and guidance helped shape the party during its early years and contributed significantly to public life in the state.

Over the years, Mukul Roy held several important roles in Indian politics. He served as a Union minister and was also a member of the Rajya Sabha. For a long time, he was considered one of Mamata Banerjee’s most trusted aides and an important strategist within the party.

Although he later chose a different political path for some time, his contribution to the Trinamool Congress remained widely recognised.

Family members said Roy had been suffering from multiple health problems. He had reportedly been diagnosed with dementia and had recently slipped into a coma before his passing. His declining health had kept him away from active politics in recent years.
