Congress candidate Asha Bhise won the Latur Zilla Parishad elections in a nail-biting finish by a margin of just two votes, confirmed by the officials on Monday.
In the Kamkheda Zilla Parishad group election, which was conducted in the Renapur tehsil, Asha Bhise won the race by a slender margin of 6,871 to 6,869 with her sister in-law and BJP candidate Sarita Bhise.
The razor-thin margin has received a lot of local media and political watchdog attention, thus portraying the competitiveness of the local polls.
Voting in the Zilla Parishad and Panchayat Samiti elections started at 10 am. There were 12 Zilla Parishads and 125 Panchayat Samitis with elections this year. As the counting of votes continues, the Election Commission is yet to announce a formal report on the outcomes.
The tight race between the two family members also provides a special twist to the story, as the political rivalries may clearly reach the family even during the local elections. Such close calls show the value of each and every vote and the political participation at the grassroots levels, according to political analysts.
The role of the Zilla Parishad elections in local governance is also key factor in the development work, allocation and execution of government schemes at the district level. Small victories can be huge in terms of party strength and administration in rural settings.
