Justice Surya Kant’s journey to becoming the 53rd Chief Justice of India is the story of hard work, determination, and values that are humble and rooted.
He was born on February 10, 1962, in a small village of Petwar in Haryana’s Hisar district.His upbringing was in a middle-class family.
As his father was a Sanskrit teacher. Due to this, the values of knowledge, discipline, and humbleness were instilled in Justice Surya Kant from an early age.
Because of those humble beginnings in a neighborhood village school, Justice Kant’s early life was marked by a love for education and an unwavering commitment to justice.
He obtained his law degree from Maharishi Dayanand University in 1984. And he began practicing law in the district courts in Hisar.
After that, he moved to the High Courts of Punjab and Haryana in Chandigarh. Here, he was admired and looked upon for his clarity in legal reasoning and strong commitment towards constitutional and civil law.
Over the years, he rose through the ranks and became the youngest Advocate General of Haryana at the early age of just 38 years.
After this, he became a judge at the Punjab and Haryana High Courts. Then he even went on to become the Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court.
Justice Surya Kant’s appointment as a Supreme Court judge in 2019 was not just because of his qualifications but also because of his notable reputation as a jurist deeply aware of the real-world implications of legal decisions.
He is recognized for his rulings on national security, citizenship, and constitutional rights.
On November 24, 2025, he was sworn in as Chief Justice of India. It was a moment to celebrate for all of us who wish to serve our nation.
We can all take inspiration from him that despite our humble upbringing, we too can rise from the sidelines and go on to become the judge in one of the highest-ranking courtrooms in India.
Justice Kant’s leadership’s main priority is to focus on reducing the backlog of cases and to restore faith in the Indian judicial process.
He also wishes to focus on bringing justice equally among all sections of the society so that justice is served equally.
And even people like him from small towns can also access law and order without any prejudice. And we all hope to see India taking a step towards better law infrastructure.
