Indian Navy Day is celebrated every year on 4 December to recognise the aspects of bravery, achievements and contributions of the Indian Navy that they have made in protecting the nation.
This special day also reminds us of the importance of maritime security and the role our naval forces play in keeping India’s waters safe.
While the modern Indian Navy is also very powerful and advanced, the roots of India’s naval vision go back many centuries. One leader who is remembered with great respect on this occasion is Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, who is often called the Father of the Indian Navy.
Shivaji Maharaj understood the importance of the sea at a time when most Indian kingdoms focused mainly on the idea of land battles. He also realised that whoever controlled the seas would have great power and protection.
With this vision, he decided to build a strong naval force for the whole Maratha Empire. His efforts and also his strategic planning on this topic are the main reasons he is given this honorary title.
During his rule, Shivaji Maharaj had also built several naval bases along the western coast of India. Important ports like those of Sindhudurg, Vijaydurg and Jaigad were also developed under his leadership.
These forts were carefully designed to watch over the sea, stop the enemy ships from entering and also to protect the coastline. His navy also included well-built ships that could help them fight battles, carry the soldiers through this route when needed and also keep an eye on coastal areas.
This was a revolutionary idea at that time in Indian history, when nobody paid major attention to this.
Shivaji Maharaj’s navy also focused on stopping the foreign powers from expanding their control over Indian waters. The Maratha navy successfully challenged the powerful European powers like the Portuguese and the British, who had a strong army.
By doing this, Shivaji Maharaj also proved that India could easily defend its coastline if dealt with courage and strategy. His leadership had also inspired future generations to understand the importance of naval defence.
On Indian Navy Day, his contribution is remembered because he was one of the earliest Indian rulers who came forward to create a structured and disciplined naval force.
Even though his ships were smaller compared to those of modern warships, his ideas were far ahead of his time. He believed that a strong navy was very important and thus also essential for the idea of trade, security and also for the protection of national interests.
Today, the Indian Navy is one of the world’s most respected maritime forces. It now makes use of modern technology, advanced ships, submarines and also aircraft to guard the Indian Ocean region.
