In a horrific case from Mumbai, a 20 year old woman with physical and mental disabilities was sexually exploited after DNA evidence revealed that her father had raped and impregnated her. Doctors at a South Mumbai hospital discovered she was nearly five months pregnant while treating her stomach issues.

In a highly unsettling instance from the city’s Cuffe Parade neighbourhood, who was taken into custody after DNA tests revealed his connection to the fetus.

When the forensic analysis ultimately revealed that the father’s DNA matched that of the unborn child, he was taken into custody. Earlier in the investigation, preliminary charges led to the detention of a, 17 year old child and another adult guy.

While they look into whether other persons were involved, authorities have promised that the victim is receiving medical and psychological care. They also stated that the involvement of other people are being looked into, highlighting the horrifying nature of the crime.

Following laboratory testing of DNA samples from 17 suspects, the father was taken into custody.

What happened?

In September 2025 the woman complained to her grandmother about discomfort in her stomach. Using hand gestures, she said felt like insects crawling in her stomach. She was then admitted to the city’s Cama & Albless Hospital. A medical examination revealed a pregnancy in its fifth month. The hospital administration immediately informed the police.

According to the police, the woman’s inability and unwillingness to make a statement caused them to first struggle with communication. The father was questioned by the police, but he denied any sexual assault and was unable to explain how his daughter got pregnant. He also refused to file a complaint.

Nevertheless, the woman consented to file that complaint following counseling.

The police detained the youngster and the second man based on the information she gave them. In order to identify the rapist, they also collected blood and DNA samples from 17 individuals, including the father, and compared them to genetic information from the fetus.

The father was the lone positive match found in the report on January 27. The rape occurred sometime between March and September 21 of last year, according to the authorities.

The tragedy has devastated the neighbourhood, with neighbours expressing their confusion that a crime of this kind could happen within a family. According to legal experts, people with intellectual and communication disabilities are among the most vulnerable to sexual violence because they often lack the capacity to report abuse or defend themselves.
