Cyclone Ditwah, a powerful storm that has been forming over the Bay of Bengal, is currently moving towards the Tamil Nadu coast.
Meteorological agencies have also warned that heavy to very heavy rain, along with strong winds, will affect many districts over the next few days.
For safety reasons, several districts in Tamil Nadu, also including coastal and delta zones, have now declared holidays for schools and colleges.
The storm is also expected to hit the coast around November 30, and rainfall is likely to begin first in the delta areas before it would be spreading across the northern parts of the state.
Some districts are already under “red alert,” which means extremely heavy rain and possible flooding, while others are under “orange alert,” signalling heavy to very heavy rainfall.
People in the affected areas have now been cautioned to stay properly indoors, avoiding venturing out unless necessary, and also to keep themselves away from water-logged or coastal zones.
Schools closing temporarily is a precautionary step that would be taken to protect children from severe weather and possible disruption from flooding or storms.
Coastal districts face additional risks such as rough seas, strong winds, and increased danger for anyone near the shore.
Fishermen and people whose work or daily life involves the sea have been strongly advised not to venture into the waters until the storm passes.
Though it’s still not exactly clear when Ditwah will make landfall, its approach has been the cause that have already disrupted normal life.
The school closures also reflect the severity of the warnings and the need to keep people, especially to keep children, safe. As the storm moves closer, residents are also urged to follow official updates and avoid unnecessary travel.
