Donald Trump, the president of the United States, declared that he would begin talks with Canada on the Gordie Howe Bridge project and threatened to prevent it from opening until Washington received fair pay and owned at least half of the property.
Trump claimed he would not permit the new bridge between Ontario and Michigan to open until Washington got full reimbursement in a lengthy post on Truth Social on Monday, accusing Canada of treating the United States very unfairly for decades. We will start negotiations, IMMEDIATELY, he wrote.
A significant infrastructure project called the Gordie Howe Bridge is being built to establish a new border crossing between Michigan and Ontario, Canada. It is intended to be a six lane bridge that crosses the Detroit River and connects Michigan’s Interstate 75 to Ontario’s Highway 401.
Rick Snyder, the governor of Michigan at the time, took the unprecedented step of utilizing his executive powers to circumvent the state legislature in 2012 when he accepted an offer from the Canadian government to pay for the majority of the Gordie Howe Bridge’s construction. 2018 saw the start of construction, and the long delayed project is almost finished.
Donald Trump wrote: The Canadian Government expects me, as President of the United States, to PERMIT them to just take advantage of America!
I will not allow this bridge to open until the United States is fully compensated for everything we have given them, he stated.
During his first administration, the Moroun family, the American owners of the nearby Ambassador Bridge, which also links Detroit and Canada, pleaded with Trump to halt the new bridge’s construction, claiming it violated their exclusive toll collection rights.
Trump and Justin Trudeau, the prime minister at the time, responded by claiming in a joint statement that the bridge was a “vital economic link” between the two nations.
The goal of the bridge, which is being built by Canadian officials, is to improve trade between the two neighboring economies and reduce traffic. Trump criticized the project’s building without more American engagement and said it has virtually no US content.
Trump also called former President Barack Obama Barack Hussein Obama in his statement.
He claimed that during his presidency, Obama gave Canada an exception from the Buy American Act. Additionally, the US President contended that Washington ought to possess perhaps, at least one half of this asset due to the magnitude of the US market.
The president of the United States specifically addressed a number of economic conflicts between the two nations.
He also brought up long standing issues with Canada’s dairy tariffs, claiming that they have put US farmers at great financial risk and have been for many years unacceptable.
A study from the University of Windsor estimates that the Gordie Howe Bridge will save trucks $2.3 billion over the next 30 years by reducing the crossing time by 20 minutes.
In addition, Trump accused Prime Minister Mark Carney of pursuing tighter connections with Beijing and cautioned against Canada’s economic links with China.
Prime Minister Carney wants to make a deal with China which will eat Canada alive, Trump wrote on Twitter. We’ll just get the leftovers.
Trump has been criticizing Mark Carney over Ottawa’s involvement with China on several occasions in recent weeks. In the event that Canada pursues a complete trade agreement with China, he has even threatened to levy a 100% tariff on Canadian exports.
