A senior engineer at Dyson has recently issued a public warning that indoor air may be far more polluted than outdoor air, thus catching many people off guard.
According to Dyson’s latest research, modern homes, despite being the ones that are appearing clean, often trap a dangerous mix of pollutants, which may include dust, pet dander, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and smoke particles.
All of this happens due to poor ventilation and synthetic materials used in furniture and building interiors.
The engineer has also noted that everyday activities such as cooking, cleaning, or even lighting candles release various kinds of microscopic pollutants into the air.
Many households also use various kinds of chemical-based cleaning sprays and even air fresheners that can introduce toxic compounds into indoor spaces.
Over time, these pollutants tend to accumulate in the air, especially in houses like the tightly sealed homes, which results in creating a “pollution hotspot” that the naked eye cannot detect.
Compared to various outdoor pollutants, indoor air contaminants often linger longer and even circulate within the same enclosed environment.
The engineer has also emphasised that this can lead to serious health risks such as asthma, allergies, respiratory infections, and even long-term lung damage.
Children, the elderly, and even various age groups with pre-existing health conditions are particularly vulnerable.
The Dyson expert has also recommended improving ventilation by keeping the windows slightly open, especially during and after activities like cooking.
Investing in a high-quality air purifier to filter all kinds of microscopic particles and harmful gases was also advised.
Regular cleaning, which is majorly focused on various dust-prone areas such as carpets, curtains, and upholstery, can also significantly reduce allergen levels.
