Income tax refund status check: Simple PAN-based guide for taxpayers

Many taxpayers still wait for their income tax refund after filing their ITR.

The good thing about this is that you can easily check your refund status using just your PAN number. The Income Tax Department also offers two simple online methods to track your refund and even helps to know whether it has been processed, approved or has been delayed.

The first method is to go through the Income Tax e-filing portal.

Users need to visit the official portal and log in using their PAN and password. Then they need to go to the “View Filed Returns” section and select the relevant assessment year.

Here, you can see whether your ITR has been processed and if your refund has been issued. If the refund is delayed, you may also see reasons listed below, like a mismatch in bank details or verification pending.

Users also need to make sure their bank account is pre-validated because the refunds cannot be credited otherwise.

The second method is to check through the TIN-NSDL refund status page. You only need to enter your PAN and the assessment year. This page also shows whether your refund has been sent by the department, failed, or might have been returned due to wrong bank details.

If your refund status shows ‘refund failed,’ you should also raise a refund reissue request on the e-filing portal.

Sometimes refunds may take longer due to additional processing, even document checks or incorrect information in the ITR.

If everything is still correct and the status still does not change, it usually means the department is still processing your return.

By using these two simple PAN-based methods, any taxpayer can easily track their income tax refund status within minutes.

It also helps remove the confusion and helps you take quick steps if there is any problem with your bank details or refund processing.
