Regarding Bollywood actor Rajpal Naurang Yadav’s conviction in cheque dishonour charges, the Delhi High Court on Thursday declined to revoke its order compelling him to appear before the relevant Jail Superintendent.
According to Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma, who ordered the actor to turn himself in before the Jail Superintendent, Tihar, immediately today the court cannot be expected to grant someone special treatment just because they come from a certain background or profession.
After the Delhi High Court denied him any respite in his check bounce cases, actor Rajpal Yadav turned himself in to the Tihar Jail authorities in Delhi on Thursday. The actor had asked for his surrender deadline to be extended. According to a jail source cited by news agency PTI, He turned himself in to the jail officials at 4 p.m. on Thursday. The jail administration will now adhere to standard operating procedure.
After the court rejects an extension of the deadline, Rajpal Yadav surrenders.
The time for Rajpal to turn himself in to the jail officials was not extended by the high court on Wednesday. The actor’s attorney informed the court that his client has made arrangements for ₹50 lakh and requested an additional week to complete the payment.
The actor was instructed to turn himself in by Wednesday at 4 p.m. on February 2. In response to the plea, the judge denied the extension. This Court cannot be expected to demonstrate or establish unusual circumstances for any individual just because that individual comes from a specific business or background.
Even while leniency is occasionally required, the court stated that it cannot be applied indefinitely, particularly when it is followed by persistent non compliance.
What is the case against Rajpal Yadav
In this case, M/s Murali Projects Pvt Ltd. filed a lawsuit against the actor and his spouse regarding many returned checks and their failure to reimburse the money owed. Rajpal Yadav was sentenced to six months in prison after he and his spouse were found guilty in check bounce instances by a Delhi magistrate’s court in 2018. In 2019, a sessions court upheld the conviction.
This was contested by the Yadav’s at the Delhi High Court. After the high court asked the actor to take sincere and genuine measures to investigate the possibilities of reaching an amicable settlement with the opposing party, the conviction was temporarily deferred in June 2024.
”A Court of law looks through only from the prism of equality as per law. While this Court, in the present case, has shown sufficient leniency towards the petitioner, it cannot lose sight of the plight of the complainant. The interests of justice require this Court to walk a careful line between compassion and discipline. Leniency, though sometimes necessary, cannot be extended endlessly, especially when it is met with continued non-compliance,” the judge said.

“The law rewards its compliance, not its contempt. Extending continuous leniency to a person who has been disregarding the directions of the law would rather also send a message to the community that the law and Court’s directions can be disregarded repeatedly without being punished for it,” the Court said.
According to the Court, such behaviour shows a lack of respect for the law, and people who disregard the law can not expect anything positive from it.
