Netflix officially confirmed the fourth and final season of its successful young adult romantic drama Mismatched, featuring the return of fan-favorite characters Rishi and Dimple in the final chapter of the series.
The announcement, which was announced February 3 has already created an emotional tsunami among the fans who have been through the love, heartbreak and self discovery of the couple over the years.
The opening credits video that Netflix released provide an intertextual allusion to the last point of the previous season. Prajakta Koli and Rohit Saraf, the actors that portray Dimple Ahuja and Rishi Shekhawat, are captured sitting together at the Marine drive, a famous place in Mumbai.
It is this very place that served as an emotional turning point in the previous season, so the visual visit to the same place is particularly significant to the viewers. The serene beach backdrop does suggest unresolved feelings and unfinished dialogues, which is the prelude to what is destined to become an emotional and introspective final season.
The reaction of the fans on the announcement was swift, as they filled the social media with a wave of excitement and emotion. It was the hope of many that final season would provide the closure that Rishi and Dimple have been waiting so long to get.
Other reactions were as heartfelt as weeping in anticipation to the toddlerish content of requesting a happy ending and this displays the extent to which audiences have become attached to the characters and their dynamic relationship.
Mismatched first premiered as a coming of age romance between two extremely different personalities that met at a summer coding program. The show expanded past a mere love story over the three seasons, looking into issues of ambition, identity, friendship and the ugly experience of growing up.
The depiction of Dimple, an aggressive and career oriented woman, by Prjekakta Koli, coupled with the earnest and romantic Rishi played by Rohit Saraf, turned out to be the emotional center of the show.
Released in December 2024, the third season added a major time jump of three years and depicted the characters in adulthood, with new priorities and emotional detachment. Although the season was not short of dramatic turns and new faces, many people watched it because they felt that the chemistry between the main couple was the central theme.
That emotional strand that has been present thus far preconditions the finale season, which is expected to focus on what occurs when two individuals who used to be everything to each other meet once again after life has led them in different directions.
The new season according to the makers will be about timing and not love. They have indicated that both Dimple and Rishi have matured and transformed but their tale is not as closure as how they thought before. The tone implies a grown-up experience of second chance, closure and the fact that some relationships may never age.
The show is produced by Gazal Dhaliwal and directed by Divyang Thakkar and being produced by Ronnie Screwvala.
The last season will also feature the same faces as Prajakta Koli and Rohit Saraf and other supporting casts such as Rannvijay Singha, Vidya Malvade, Ahsaas Channa, Taaruk Raina and Muskkaan Jaferi among other supporting actors who have been around in the show.
