As part of a big initiative to go green, Uttar Pradesh is also progressing in its plans to convert Prayagraj into a solar city. The district has been given a challenging target of installing one lakh solar panels by 2027 which officials believe will enhance self reliance in energy production as well as enhance environmental sustainability.
As stated by officials who are affiliated to Uttar Pradesh New and Renewable Energy Development Agency, reception of the residents has been already positive. They have already received applications on more than 27,000 rooftop systems, and installed more than 12,000 panels.
By the beginning of February, the district is producing over 36,000 kilowatts of solar-powered electricity, which is a consistent step towards the bigger target.
The program is a part of the state government initiative to increase the volume of green energy. The government allocated more than Rs 2,100 crore in the 2026 to 2027 budget to speed up the investment in the solar, bioenergy, and green hydrogen projects.
The long term goal is to shift toward energy security maintaining an ecological balance. Currently, over 2,800 MW of solar power has already been installed in the state and Prayagraj has become one of the most significant contributors.
A large portion of this increase is due to the rooftop programme within the PM Surya Ghar Yojana which provides large financial aid to households. The central government (Rs 30,000) and state (Rs 15,000) subsidies of the scheme will be received by consumers who install a 1 kilowatt system. In case of a 2 kilowatt system, the overall support increases to Rs 90,000.
Individuals who want to install 3 kilowatts and above can enjoy combined incentives of more than Rs 1 lakh, which will significantly lower the installation expenses.
Professionals claim that the greatest enthusiasm has been expressed in urban neighbourhoods within the city of Prayagraj this financial year. The families are also using solar power as an effective alternative to save money related to electricity and cooking fuel, and with decreasing electricity and cooking fuel prices, more families are resorting to solar power.
Those residents who have already installed the system reported visible savings. Usha Singh, a resident of the Alka Vihar Colony area, has chosen to install a 3 kilowatt rooftop unit after realizing that it was getting harder and harder to meet the household costs.
The system has assisted her in saving approximately 10 units of electricity per day. She has also been in a position to reduce the regular buying of LPG cylinders by switching to induction based cooking.
Governments emphasize that the returns extend beyond individual households. Rapid rooftop solar is providing employment in installations, maintenance, and supply chains. It is also lowering reliance on traditional energy providers, reducing emissions and aiding the state to shift towards a cleaner growth.
Thousands of residents are already on board, and with the momentum of increasing awareness, the administrators are hopeful that Prayagraj can, and even surpass, the one lakh installation goal in the given timeframe.

Once it is done, the model can be implemented in other districts, accelerating the process of developing Uttar Pradesh into a more sustainable and more resilient energy system.
