A 36 year old businessman of East Delhi is dead after being ruthlessly attacked in a late night dispute in the Connaught Place of the capital, becoming the latest casualty in the question of security in one of the busiest commercial centres in the capital.
The victim, who was known as Shivam Gupta, went to Connaught Place on January 2 night to attend a party with his friend. Police claimed that the event happened around the Rajiv Chowk metro station, which is almost always busy even at late hours.
According to the investigators, an argument erupted between Shivam and a group of delivery riders following allegations where he demanded some drinking water. What started as a small fight, degenerated into an episode of violence. According to police, there were about three men who were involved in the assault.
In the attack, the accused is accused of striking Shivam with his or her helmets on the head and kicking and punching him numerous times. He lay insensible on the road, in a state of great hemorrhage. The police were alerted later by the bystanders.
On January 3 at about 1.30 am, a Police Control Room call was received that reported that there was an unconscious man who had fallen in a pool of blood. Shivam was taken to a local hospital and the doctors discovered that he had several serious head wounds and a hematoma. Due to his critical status, he failed to make a statement to the police.
In the meantime, the family of Shivam was worried as he failed to attend home that night. His phone was not reachable and when he tried to contact him more than once, in vain. Several hours after that the family was called by the police telling them that he was taken to the hospital. They were shocked and very much distressed by the news.
Shivam was transferred to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital on January 4 where he received further treatment. The following day he was operated upon. Doctors informed the family that 36-72 hours would be very important.
His condition was still serious despite the short-lived signs of improvement. Shivam died on January 19 after over two weeks of fighting to keep himself alive.
Representatives of the police told about the fact that they have gone to the crime scene shortly after the incident had occurred, retrieved bloodstained evidence, and analyzed CCTV footage of the surrounding area.
One of the cases has been registered in accordance with applicable provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. According to the officers, additional major charges could be added as the case goes on.
To date, 2 suspects have been arrested relating to the attack, and more efforts are done to identify and locate others who might have taken part in it. Police sources indicated that the investigation is still underway and there could still be further arrests.
Family of Shivam has accused him that he was assaulted with a helmet that was used as a weapon. One of the family members indicated that the family is seeking stern measures against the perpetrators in order to ensure that no other family would have to endure a loss like that.

The event has brought into light the issues of the security of the citizens in crowded places of Delhi and more so in the late night hours. To ensure that such violent acts do not happen again in future, citizens and activists have demanded more police presence, good surveillance and faster response systems.
