Over 2 Cr Devotees Participate in Holy Dip at Sangam on Maghi Purnima

Over 2.1 crore followers assembled at the holy Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj to take a sacred dip of the holy day of Magh Purnima Snan Parv which is among the most spiritually important days in the Hindu calendar. Wednesday, the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Yogi Adityanath told the media that the massive attendance was a strong indication of the long spiritual tradition of India and how strongly its people believed.

Addressing the huge numbers of people who came to visit the event as a great congregation of faith, religion and culture, the Chief Minister referred to the timeless and continuous Sanatan tradition as the confluence of faith, religion and culture, which he dubbed as prayag.

The holy city, which was once considered sacred as Tirtharaj Prayag, is still taking the centre stage in the religious conscience of India and attracts pilgrims who seek spiritual cleansing and blessings.

In congratulating the saints and sadhus who attended the holy bath on this occasion, Yogi Adityanath congratulated thousands of devotees who were gathered to attend the holy bath.

He told me that the Magh Purnima Snan Parv was once again a display of the deep spiritual faith that unites people in the different regions and in different languages and communities. Such events, he says, not only enhance religious devotion, but also enhance India rich cultural continuity that has been in existence over centuries.

The Chief Minister also expressed personal appreciation to those many agencies and individuals who undertook the event behind the scenes in order to ensure that the event was conducted smoothly.

He appreciated the police administration, local authorities, Mela management teams, sanitation workers, voluntary organisations and boatmen. He particularly commended the concerted efforts of different departments of the state government that served to control the huge numbers of pilgrims peacefully and systematically.

Authorities had already embarked on the detailed preparations of crowd control, security, sanitation, medical assistance and traffic coordination within and outside the Sangam locale.

Shanty structures such as drinking water stations, toilets and health camps were established to cater to the demands of travelling devotees. Cleanliness in the ghats was given special consideration and safe transport of pilgrims in and out of the bathing areas was given special concern.

The Triveni Sangam (the holy meeting of the rivers Ganga, Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati) is taken to be one of the most sacred places within Hinduism.

It is said that the act of bathing at the Sangam on Magh Purnima cleanses sins among the devotees and makes them become spiritual merit. The day is also considered to be specially important to kalpvasis who practice a month of spirituality, prayer and austerity at the banks of the river during the Magh Mela.

Magh Purnima annually attracts millions of people to Prayagraj, which proves that the city remains one of the most worshiped spiritual centres in India. The attendance of 2.1 crore followers this year is a symbol of the timeless nature of the old traditions in the modern world.

Although it was a challenging period in modern times, the well-planned structure of the event showed that the state administration paid attention to both the security and religiousness of the country on the occasion of the one of the biggest religious events in the country.
