Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a press conference at the Parliament on Thursday, January 29, 2026, highlighting the importance of the session and the developmental priorities of the country. The President discussed the speech given by the Prime Minister as an echo of the faith of 140 crore people as a measure of their collective effort and a true reflection of Indian youth.
Shri Modi has observed that the President set the beginning of the year and the session with some guiding points that were pivotal, establishing the basis of what he referred to as a decisive turning point in the Indian journey.
With the point that the expectations expressed in the Presidential address in plain and simple words would go deep with Members of Parliament, he emphasized the significance of this Budget Session.
By referring to this as the first Budget of the second quarter of the 21st century, the Prime Minister further explained its historicity. The session is not only the start of the year 2026, but also a new stage of national development, he stated. As India seeks to become a developed country by 2047, the coming 25 years, he stressed, would be critical.
Shri Modi also observed the difference in Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman delivering her ninth consecutive Union Budget, which is one of the milestones in the parliamentary history of India. He was very pleased with this accomplishment, and he emphasised her leadership and experience in directing the finances of the country.
The Prime Minister was optimistic concerning the world position of India, stating that the beginning of the year was very positive and India was slowly becoming a ray of hope, a center of attraction to the rest of the world. Specifically, he cited the new quarter by the recently signed Free Trade Agreement between India and the European Union (EU) as a highlight.
The Prime Minister described the agreement as a symbol of India’s ambitious economic aspirations, opening up “vast markets” and offering great opportunities for Indian producers and manufacturers. He wanted industry leaders not to relax but to work hard on quality when moving into the EU market.
As PM Modi puts it, providing quality products will not only guarantee profits but also earn the confidence and respect of the consumers in the 27 EU countries, and thus create a long-lasting brand prestige.
For Shri Modi, the agreement opens up possibilities not only to the manufacturers but also to farmers, fishermen, young individuals and service sector workers who want to engage the world. He said he was hopeful that this would help in making India a confident, competitive, and productive nation.
With attention naturally turning to the Budget, the Prime Minister was able to remind the country that the government is still based on Reform, Perform, and Transform. He declared that the nation is fast moving up what he called the Reform Express and he thanked all the Members of Parliament who have made a positive input in the speeding up of this process of reform.
PM Modi emphasized that the government is working to resolve past challenges by ensuring that long-term solutions are adopted to foster predictability and create trust in the world. He emphasized that the human factor of the approach of the government to progress is inherently human, balancing technological implementation and consideration of the needs of people.
In response to opponents, the Prime Minister again asserted that they too recognize the focus of the government on the so-called last-mile delivery, where schemes and initiatives are applied to real people and not only administrative files. He promised that such a promise would be carried on with the new generation of reforms.
PM Modi also talked about the strengths of India in democracy and demographic potential and said that they were a great hope for the world. He stressed that in this temple of democracy, India could reassert itself, its commitment to democratic values and respect of decisions made by democratic processes, all of which he opined have been welcomed internationally.
