As more American internet companies allow consumers to choose more robust defenses against hackers in exchange for a more constrained experience, Meta’s WhatsApp messaging service is now offering users a sophisticated security mode. The new feature, “Strict Account Settings,” is a one-click button in WhatsApp’s settings that initiates a number of defenses. It will go live on Tuesday.

These include turning off link previews the thumbnails that show up when a URL is entered into a chat blocking media and attachments from senders you don’t know, and banning calls from contacts you don’t know. All three have been recognized as possible entry points for sophisticated hackers and surveillance.

WhatsApp stated in a blog post that although end-to-end encryption protected all user communications, “we also know that a few of our users like journalists or public-facing figures may need extreme safeguards against rare and highly sophisticated cyberattacks.”

Who is the feature designed for?

WhatsApp claims that the main goal of Strict Account Settings is to shield users from infrequent and extremely complex intrusions. The functionality is particularly helpful for journalists, activists, and public figures who can be more vulnerable to targeted surveillance or hacking attempts, according to the business.

What Strict Account Settings do

Once activated, the function initiates many safeguards automatically. These include turning off link previews, the thumbnails that show up when a URL is shared in a chat, banning media files and attachments from senders you don’t know, and blocking calls from contacts you don’t know.

According to WhatsApp, these three components have been found to be possible entry points for sophisticated cyberattacks and monitoring.

One-Tap activation for existing security controls

Although the platform already has these security measures separately, the new feature unifies them and activates them with a single tap. For customers who want more protection without having to manually change several settings, this streamlines the procedure.

How to enable Strict Account Settings on WhatsApp

By going to Settings > Privacy > Advanced in the WhatsApp app, users can activate Strict Account Settings. Users are urged to update the software to the most recent version if the option is not displayed. Since the function is being sent out gradually and will be accessible to all users in the upcoming weeks, if it still does not display, it might not have reached their account yet.

Apple unveiled Lockdown Mode in 2022. According to the firm, it is a severe protective function that is only available to a select few customers who might be vulnerable to sophisticated cyberthreats. The majority of message attachment formats, link previews, FaceTime calls, and web surfing are all disabled in Lockdown Mode.
