In another milestone in the field of commercial spaceflight, the aerospace company Blue Origin, led by Amazon billionaire Jeff Bezos, made its debut crewed flight of 2026. On Thursday night, the company reusable New Shepard rocket carried six civilians into the frontier of space to give them a few minutes of weightlessness with an amazing view of the curvature of the earth.
The mission (named New Shepard NS-38) was launched at the launch site of the company, located in West Texas, as a continuation of the momentum in the direction of the private space industry.
The mission was finally launched at about 9.55 pm Indian Standard Time despite a delay of 25 minutes, which attracted the attention of the world as another manifestation of the commercialization of space. Blue
Origin has been able to establish itself as a serious player in the space tourism market, alongside other companies like Virgin Galactic and SpaceX, as private spacecraft companies open more and more suborbital journeys that previously were only accessible to government astronauts.
A Just a Little Way Up the Road.
The NS-38 mission took approximately 11 minutes whereby the capsule containing the passengers rose above the internationally recognised Karman line, the space demarcation line set at about 100 kilometres above the earth surface.
The reusable booster automatically landed vertically on the concrete landing pad in the West Texas site after main engine shutoff and separation. In the meantime, the crew capsule had been heading onwards, and provided its occupants with beautiful views until it dropped back on Earth under parachutes.
The occupants took a couple of minutes of weightlessness in suborbital flight and landed safely in the desert. The successful launch of both the booster and the crew capsule is a reaffirmation of the success that Blue Origin continues to enjoy with its strategy of reusable spacecrafts.
Meet the Crew of NS-38
The six on board were a combination of professionals and adventurers who are indicative of the growing diversity in the space tourist:
Tim Drexler – A pilot and an entrepreneur, Drexler had spent the last 40 years developing Ace Asphalt, a large civil contracting company. He has a strong interest in aviation since his early years and has licences in flying helicopters as well as fixed-wing aircraft.
Dr Linda Edwards – Edwards is a retired board-certified obstetrician-gynaecologist who devoted her 40-year career in medicine to women’s health. She has visited over 40 countries, is a wildlife activist, an award winning equestrian and a breast cancer survivor twice.
Alain Fernandez – International real estate developer, investor, Fernandez survived a life changing diving accident when he was 22 when he was a scuba instructor in French Polynesia. He has since made a three-decade career in real estate.
Alberto Gutierrez Pascual – Gutierrez is an entrepreneur and technologist who co-founded Civitatis, a tours and activities company that provides services to more than one million travellers every month. He has traveled over 100 countries in all the 7 continents and has integrated his passion to travel and business innovation.
Jim Hendren – Hendren has a long aviation and leadership history with the U.S. Air Force, and he is retired. The military life highlighted his life lifelong love of flight and travel.
Laura Stiles – As the Director of New Shepard Launch Operations at Blue Origin, Stiles is the key to the significance of full-time and seasoned aerospace personnel working in the commercial space tourism industry.
Blue Origin asserted on social media that New Shepard has since now launched 98 humans representing 92 different people to space since its inception, highlighting the consistent pace of the programme and its increasing influence in the commercial space travel.
What Are the Costs of these Flights?
Although Blue Origin has not publicly revealed the specific prices of its tickets when it comes to the New Shepard flights, the industry estimates can shed some light on the price of a seat.
The average cost of a full ticket is estimated to be between about $200,000 and 300,000 or more, and the deposit that passengers pay is normally refundable depending on the distance, that is, prospective passengers usually reserve a place with a deposit of 150,000.
These numbers indicate both the uniqueness of the experience and how much infrastructure it takes to get the civilians to the limit of space.
To put into perspective, in 2021, the initial seat auction held by Blue Origin raised an astounding 28 million dollars, but that was more of an exceptional consumer event than an average auction price.
Commercial Space Tourism in Competitive Landscape.
The achievement of the NS-38 draws light to the recent fast development of commercial spaceflight. Space tourism is no longer a far off fantasy of a small number of people, but the experience of microgravity and a suborbital view is increasingly available to ordinary people, mediated by private companies.
Each of Blue Origin, Virgin Galactic, and SpaceX is towards a different direction: Blue Origin does high-frequency suborbital flights, Virgin Galactic provides a spaceplane experience, while the missions of SpaceX include longer-duration orbital tourism.
The short flights of New Shepard are created to make the most of simplicity and safety and provide the passengers with a radical space experience.
The flights do not plunge the occupants into complete orbit around the planet, but they give the experience of departure out of the atmosphere of the planet and a personal view of the curvature of the planet, which was previously the prerogative of government-sponsored astronauts.
What Comes Next?
In the case of Blue Origin, NS-38 confirms the validity of the reusable rocket system and preconditions further missions. The ongoing success of the programme is an indication that commercial space tourism is becoming a real industry with a commercial demand.
The transformative experience of space travel might become available to even more participants with the improvement of technology and the growth of the launch frequency.

At present, the NS-38 crew are members of a select few who have ever traveled beyond the atmosphere of the earth a credit to human fascination, technological innovation and the increasing influence of the privatisation of space exploration.
