New Alexa.com site allows browser-based access to Amazon’s AI assistant. On Monday, Amazon released the web-based version of its improved AI assistant, Alexa+, which enabled users to interact with the service when using a browser. The relocation puts the assistant of Amazon closer to competition with popular AI chatbots, like ChatGPT by OpenAI and Google Gemini.
The latest version of Alexa.com site is only accessible to Alexa+ members. The service, which was launched in February last year is still in early access. Alexa+ requires users to create a waitlist or have more recent Amazon devices to utilize it.
Amazon states that using the web version people could ask questions, study complicated subjects, make content, organize trip plans and solve homework. The company claimed that users have the opportunity to control and manage devices of smart homes through the chat interface.
Amazon is also increasing the interactions with Alexa+ by adding a browser-based access. So far, the assistant was supported by a mobile application and a few Echo devices. The web version supports access to both laptops and desktops, in accordance with the typical way many of the popular AI chatbots are utilized.
The introduction of the AI service makes the offer of Amazon even closer to its competitors, including OpenAI, Google, Anthropic and Perplexity, whose chatbots are often used with web-based browsers. The capability of Alexa has been experiencing increased pressure to be updated as generative AI tools gain popularity in Amazon.
Ever since its release, the company has been slowly launching Alexa+ and has indicated that tens of millions of users can access the service. Amazon had previously been preliminary of Alexa.com when it declared Alexa+ last year and mentioned that the location would be released in the upcoming months.
In July, the company reported to The Washington Post that the feature would be availed to early access customers over the summer.
