The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is now preparing a major step toward reducing the range of spam and fraud calls across India.
The new proposal suggests that every mobile phone should display the caller’s KYC-verified name whenever a call is received.
This means users will be able to instantly identify who is calling, even if the number is not saved in their contact list.
The move is being seen as a very amazing and strong effort to fight the era and concept of unwanted calls, scams, and even the scam of impersonation cases that have increased in recent years.
According to DoT officials, telecom operators already collect the KYC details from every customer, but this information is not currently being shown to the person who is on the other side, receiving the call.
Displaying the verified name would help people make safer decisions before picking up unknown calls. Authorities also tend to believe this system will significantly reduce the number of frauds which is majorly involving fake identities, loan scams, OTP theft, and other cybercrimes carried out through phone calls.
The proposal has been sent to telecom companies for feedback.
Operators will also need to make major types of technical changes to ensure the KYC name appears instantly and accurately on all devices.
While some users are also concerned about the privacy issues, the government also says the displayed name will be the same as the one already submitted during the SIM card registration, and no any kind of sensitive personal information will be displayed.
Experts also say this change could work similarly to third-party caller ID apps, but with better accuracy because it will rely on official telecom databases.
This also ensures that all the types of spoofed or illegally issued numbers cannot hide behind fake identities. Many consumer groups have welcomed the decision, calling it an important step toward a safer mobile environment.
