Tesla CEO Elon Musk has revealed an exciting plan for the company’s AI chips. As he’s aiming to build more AI chips than all other chip makers are contributing combined.
Tesla is always researching making sure to be on top of it’s own. And now Tesla has been quietly developing its own custom AI chip designs for several years, which power the AI systems in their electric cars and future robots.
Musk’s recent post on X highlights Tesla’s focus on rapid innovation and vertical integration in AI hardware.Musk explained that Tesla has already produced and deployed millions of its AI chips, including the latest AI4 version.
The company is close to completing AI5, with work already starting on AI6. These chips are crucial to Tesla’s goal of making self-driving cars safer and powering their Optimus humanoid robot project, which aims to assist with medical and other tasks. One remarkable aspect is Tesla’s plan to release a new chip design every year.
This is much faster than the industry norm, where chip development usually takes 18 to 24 months. Musk personally meets with the chip engineering team twice a week to keep the development on track, showing his hands-on leadership style.
He expects these intense sessions to slow down once AI5 chips are finalized.Tesla’s approach to building its own chips instead of relying on outside suppliers fits with Musk’s long-term vision of full control over its technology stack—from chip design and AI training to deployment.
This vertical integration can give Tesla a major advantage in the competitive AI and electric vehicle market. In his post, Musk also invited talented engineers interested in AI chip design to join Tesla.
He emphasized the company’s focus on applying cutting-edge AI methods to chip development, offering an exciting opportunity for those passionate about hardware and artificial intelligence.
Tesla’s ambitious AI chip roadmap shows how the company is pushing innovation beyond electric cars into robotics and AI hardware leadership.
Musk’s vision of building chips at volumes greater than all competitors combined is bold, but it reflects Tesla’s confidence in its unique approach and technological strength.
