There are altogether 7,554 contestants fighting for the local bodies elections that hold great significance for all the leading political parties in Punjab – AAP, BJP, Congress, and SAD – before the Assembly election next year.
Votings for the civic body elections began at 8 a.m. on Friday that is 29 May 2026. The event proceeded under heavy security.
Polling for 102 municipal bodies across Punjab, including eight Municipal Corporations such as Mohali, Bathinda, Moga, and Pathankot, was held on May 26 using ballot papers. The elections saw a voter turnout of 63.94%.
Officials stated that two micro observers are being assigned to each counting centre and they will work under direct supervision of district’s general observer.
Only the authorised person can enter the counting hall and rest all shall be restricted.

Previously, AAP was accused by opposition parties that they are misusing official voting machines. These local election act as a make or break situation for the ruling party to assert their dominance and prove their popularity while defending their leadership in the state.
